Has anyone used Rosetta Stone?

Please tell me what you think. I am thinking of getting it for Spanish.

I haven't used it to learn another language, but I have used the English version for teaching English in ESOL classes for adults. (I am not a "real" ESOL teacher but volunteered in the ESOL program at my church for several years.)

We used it pretty consistently in our classes and it seemed quite effective. The students definitely enjoyed it more than "traditional" lessons. It's very interactive & uses a lot of repetition, which is good. I was teaching in the intro level, so we did have a lot of students with little to no English skills and they were able to follow along with the Rosetta lessons.

I definitely like it better than the Pimsleur audio programs (which I have used in Spanish).

OP, I saw the PPs post about livemocha and thought it was just spam of something, but it seems like it's the real deal. I read a bunch of reviews about it saying livemocha was really giving Rosetta Stone some competition. I've also been curious about Rosetta Stone but don't have the money. I'm going to try livemocha. I guess they make their money by offering extras for a fee.

livemocha.com was suggested to me here the other week, and I have been hooked on it since. I've been practicing my Spanish with people all over the world. And you, in turn, help peole trying to speak English. I highly recommend it. I have learned so much in the past week.

If you live in Arlington County, you can use Rosetta Stone for free via the public library. Other counties may do the same thing.

I tried Rosetta Stone for Chinese and wasn't wild about it. It's based on the immersion method. I find I can retain things more easily if I learn the rules, which is also the way adults learn in general. However if it's free on livemocha.com, well then go for it!

Umm - livemocha is NOT free. I can't find a single course without a fee. What's up with everyone saying it was free? Now I'm bummed I gave them my email address.

I tried Rosetta Stone out in an airport. My impression was that if you are good at learning languages, and if the language is one of the easier ones to learn, you will quickly advance beyond what it offers. For languages that are difficult to learn, and for people who have difficulty learning languages, it might work out OK.

10:38 here again. I'm actually fluent in several languages, so I'm not a novice at learning them at all and was trying to add another. I prefer a rules-based approach, but maybe I'm just old. I do agree with the comment that the grammar, as far as it goes, is pretty basic and won't take you very far.

Scroll past the packages they sell, and you'll see a link at the bottom right corner.
