Yes OP, my daughter is almost 6 and also likes mermaids, but she was playing with these sorts of sets a couple of years ago. Now she loves friendship bracelets, etc., similar to what PP posted.

that set is for a 3 year old - look for something a little more complicated - maybe a craft project? or even one of those mermaid tail nblankets

My 6 year old would love any of these. We gave a fleece variety of the mermaid tail for Christmas last year and she liked it.
