Dressing as Michael Jackson is blackface. But I'm not sure he thought/thinks of it that way. Remember the children's Moana and Maui costumes? Those were from this decade, not 35 years ago.

You really view putting black face on as a more realistic way to portray Michael Jackson (which in today's culture would be a no no, but in 1984 I don't people would have felt so strongly about it) versus dressing up as a KKK member? Nothing that acknowledges, I was a racist, I did horrible things, I had to go through some serious self-reflection to realize that over the past 3 decades and to realize how wrong my views were, I am deeply offended by my younger self and deeply sorry, etc. etc. There was nothing reflective about the statements he has given.

I am a white liberal and think he needs to step down immediately.

White, liberal Virginian here. He needs to resign. He was a grown man when he was in the photo/chose to include it be on his yearbook page. I can forgive him for what he did and pray for him because I am Christian, but it remains morally bankrupt and reprehensible.

I half agree with you. I do think he was in those pictures and he's lying about it because he thinks he can get away with it and save his political career. I find that part nauseating. However, I don't believe based on his record that he is now a racist. I really wish he had admitted it and asked for forgiveness, but truth be told in today's political climate, the Democratic establishment would have demanded he resign anyway.

This was 35 years ago. People change A LOT in 35 years. There is no reason to think that he is the same man now as he was then.

2) he apologized repeatedly for the content of his page. Which I personally think was a mistake, since the page was created without his approval, therefore he has nothing to apologize for. If anyone needs to be tarred and feathered over this, it's whoever edited the yearbook, not Northam.
