Dressing as Michael Jackson is blackface. But I'm not sure he thought/thinks of it that way. Remember the children's Moana and Maui costumes? Those were from this decade, not 35 years ago. |
| You people need to let this go. He apologized. It's over. Move on. |
Are you out of your mind? You really view putting black face on as a more realistic way to portray Michael Jackson (which in today's culture would be a no no, but in 1984 I don't people would have felt so strongly about it) versus dressing up as a KKK member? Seriously?? These aren't remotely the same. |
He didn't apologize, he denied it was him. Which most people find implausible. |
Even if he was a racist 35 years, there is nothing from his political record to indicate that he hold the same views. Are people not allowed to evolve and move on? One mistake and that's it, even decades later? |
He hasn't issued any real apology. Nothing that acknowledges, I was a racist, I did horrible things, I had to go through some serious self-reflection to realize that over the past 3 decades and to realize how wrong my views were, I am deeply offended by my younger self and deeply sorry, etc. etc. There was nothing reflective about the statements he has given. I am a white liberal and think he needs to step down immediately. |
| White, liberal Virginian here. He needs to resign. He was a grown man when he was in the photo/chose to include it be on his yearbook page. I can forgive him for what he did and pray for him because I am Christian, but it remains morally bankrupt and reprehensible. |
I half agree with you. I do think he was in those pictures and he's lying about it because he thinks he can get away with it and save his political career. I find that part nauseating. However, I don't believe based on his record that he is now a racist. I really wish he had admitted it and asked for forgiveness, but truth be told in today's political climate, the Democratic establishment would have demanded he resign anyway. |
This was 35 years ago. People change A LOT in 35 years. There is no reason to think that he is the same man now as he was then. |
1) you're not a "liberal". You're a liar and a troll posing (poorly). Because Progressives don't use the "L" word. That's something that identifies you as a MAGAt troll. 2) he apologized repeatedly for the content of his page. Which I personally think was a mistake, since the page was created without his approval, therefore he has nothing to apologize for. If anyone needs to be tarred and feathered over this, it's whoever edited the yearbook, not Northam. 3) he is clearly NOT a racist. 4) it was 35 years ago. Totally irrelevant to anyone or anything today. 5) F' off 3 3) |

I agree, people can change. I hope and pray that in his heart that he has changed. But I don't believe someone who made racist choices in his adult past can lead effectively in Virginia. |

He’s a wealthy and privileged man who grew up racist.
He’s caught. Now he’s racist and a terrible liar. He doesn’t have a remorseful or truthful bone in his body. |
| The only thing anyone needs to hear from Northam now is his resignation speech. |
Sure. He was so privileged and wealthy that he went to a tiny, obscure medical school near his hometown that no one ever heard of prior to yesterday. Because Harvard just wasn't exclusive enough for him.
