Why is everyone moving to Lewes to retire?

Ok, I get it that taxes are lower. However, all I see are these little sterile looking developments popping up all over. I like the idea of a second vacation home, but I don't see myself in these neighborhoods. Yet, everyone seems to like it. What don't I understand?

Link to pictures of the sterile little developments?

Close to medical care, slower pace, close to water and shopping, slower pace...

The lower taxes is a huge issue for many retirees, especially on a fixed income.

I'm not talking about the old town. I am talking about a ton of suburban developments kind if north and west. New single family homes, all tan or greige, with first floor bedrooms and upstairs bedrooms designed for the over 60 crowd. Tons of lawn, a few trees. Not really close to the shore, you have to drive there.

If one were retired, it is already a slower pace. This area is just as congested with shopping as any place around here.

I'm guessing that is it otherwise I do not see the attraction.

Maybe the attraction is that they are homes designed for retirement. Some people as they get older want to be around other older people (aka no kids). Plus I bet those types of neighborhoods attract businesses that cater to retirees.

Where is that? Never heard of it.

Sounds great. My creaky knees and I are still hoping for the links!

Places like Lewes are easy and comfortable for people as they are designed to fill the need of a certain demographic. I'm 66 and have no desire to be in a planned community for people my age. It's boring to be surrounded by old people. I have a winter home in Florida where there are tons of old people but I live in a regular neighborhood. But when I reach 80 my needs could change.

That is what I am thinking of doing.

Is anyone here currently living in a new development at the beach full time? What do you think?

We have a second house in the agricultural area of Lewes. It was affordable and 15 minutes to rehoboth or Lewes. We got more house than being closer to the water. Ours isn't a new development but all the farms that surrounded our 1980's development of individualized houses are now cookie cutter developments so some the charm of the rural location is gone. Our property taxes for a 3+bedroom house on 1/4 acre is less than 1000/yr. the only other monthly bill is electricity...we're are on well and septic. I love vacationing there but I do not ever see us living there Year round.
