DH and I saw this last night. Finally a RomCom that is cute, funny, dramatic, and not too heavy and not too light. Weird to say "not too heavy" since the premise is a guy meeting his GF's parents for the first time after she is put into a medically induced coma for a raging infection. But this is based on the true story of Kumail Nanjiani and his IRL wife Emily, who co-wrote the script. So you know Emily isn't going to die and everything is going to be ok. We loved this movie but hadn't heard any buzz about it. What did others think?

Nanjiani and his wife gave a good interview on "Fresh Air" a couple of weeks ago. I'd like to see the movie not only because I've heard it's good, but because I've got a huge crush on Ray Romano.

It was meh. Maybe I went into it with too high of hopes based on all the buzz and praise around it. It wasn't bad, but it certainly didn't live up to the hype. It wasn't *that* funny or *that* cute or *that* romantic or *that* thought provoking, and I feel like movies should stand out in at least one of those areas to get they kind of reviews The Big Sick got.
I'd give it a solid C. Really wasn't worth seeing in the theater, IMO. I think there's an Indian "moment" going on in media right now (which is not a bad thing, I enjoy a lot of the shows/movies I'd put in that category), and I think that led to higher praise than was warranted. |

I guess it's just the podcasts that I listen to, but I heard a ton of interviews with them before the movie went into wide release. I really want to see it but unless a friend wants to go will probably wait until I can stream it--I just prefer to watch movies that way.
And Kumail is Pakistani, not Indian, 15:55, so I guess you didn't pay too much attention during the movie. |
| My husband and I both thoroughly enjoyed it! Best movie I've seen in a long time! |
| Absolutely loved it! Touching and hilarious. |
LOL, good point - but as he mentioned during the movie, they were Indian until 1947. Not THAT far removed, and my point still stands. You're better off waiting to stream it. |
Glad I'm not alone. My friend really wanted to see it so I went with her. It wasn't bad by any means and I got a kick out of the characters but I could have been fine missing it. |

I loved it, Ray Romano and Holly Hunter were great, just a good movie from my perspective. My adult son and his daughter also loved it.
That said, my adult daughter and my XH didn't think it was all that great, so there you go. It's an individual thing. However, it's gotten great reviews from both critics and users. |
You will be disappointed then because Ray Romano gained weight for the role and grew a beard. He plays a sweet, but kind of dumpy dad in the movie. I hardly recognized him. |
| Loved this movie. One of the best I've seen lately. |

DH is also from a traditional culture where his mom was trying to set him up with other women right up until she learned about me (which didn't happen until we were practically engaged) so I expected to love it but we were both like "...meh".
My in-laws were never mad that I'm white though, they were just happy their son was finally settling down, so idk that part didn't really speak to us. |

I liked it a lot, but I agree that it's getting overpraised. It reminded me in certain ways of "The Brothers McMullen" ... a little unfinished, but charming nonetheless.

| I saw it last night. Like others, I think it was fine and pretty funny, but not spectacular. I wish Kumail himself had a better comedy routine. |
| I just saw it and liked it a lot. One of the better movies I've seen recently. However, I think they showed pretty much all of the funny moments in the trailers and could've utilized his career as a comedian better in his lines. (though the latter might have not been his character) |
