How to tell them we don't want to vacation together

A family we know from DD school is always askig to join us on our family vacation. Our DD does not get along with their child, and we have distanced ourselves over the last few years but they just don't get the message. We cherish our family vacations but we dont want to be rude and be so direct, and we also do not want to spend a week with them on a trip which we have arranged for our family, and they have invested zero planning or thought. Any advice on how to get them to get the hint?

Usually people who ask/expect such outrageous things won't be able to take a hint. You will need to be pretty direct.

Umm, have you gone with them in the past? If not, what have you said-or not said? Are you sure they're really seriously asking?

Don't even make it about vacation time or anything. Just say:

"This a vacation we are planning for our family to spend time together. Will you be at the block party next week?"

"I'm sorry, this is a family only vacation. But we look forward to seeing you at the pool next week!" or some similar sentence.

What does it matter? You sound jealous, and like a petty, selfish, opportunistic user who claims to be someone's friend - if they need a vacation, a job a place to live or money, that is!
