Alt routes to OBX from Fairfax

Any other alternatives besides going down 95??? We live in Fairfax.
Dreading the car ride b/c of 95.

We go down there every year, just came back on Saturday.

My advice: leave by 6 a.m. You will beat most of the 95 traffic and most importantly, traffic on the bridge, which if you hit it right, is much worse than the 95 traffic!

Just got back and I second the leave at 6am - when we did this we hit NO traffic. If you wait any later which we did coming back, it added 2.5 hours, ugh!

We've used these directions before. It makes for a pleasant drive on secondary roads.

Alternate Route for I95 and US 13 Users: Use this route to avoid the heavy traffic around Richmond, Norfolk-Hampton Roads-Virginia Beach, and the Wright Brothers Bridge at Kitty Hawk. Up to two hour delays have been experienced by our guests at all these choke-points.

* I-95 TO I-295 TO PETERSBURG, VA
* US 460 TO SUFFOLK, VA
* US 13/32 TO EDENTON, NC
* US/NC 32 TO US 64 VICINITY OF CRESWELL, NC
* US 64 TO NC 12 TO HATTERAS

Another for leaving really early. We do and never hit traffic. You can plan for things to do in OBX before your rental is ready - golf, lunch, shopping, even going to the beach.
