You can evaluate cost (retainer and hourly rate).
Here's a tip: work with your spouse to come up with an agreement that puts your children first. Then you both won't be out tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees.
This is what a good mediator does for the fraction of the cost of lawyers. There are many issues that divorcing parents may not even think of. A mediator can do all that. Once the agreement is finalized, hand it over to the lawyer for review. Much cheaper than starting with the lawyer.
