I'm trying to shift my 6 month old dog from eating 3x a day to 2 times a day and I'm not sure she is adapting. She eats at 7 am and had been having lunch at 12:30 and dinner at 5. I've been playing with the amounts so she gets more in the AM and PM and I'm decreasing the lunch ( 1 1/2 cups AM and PM and like 1/3 cup right now at lunch. Been giving dinner at 4 now and she is harassing me even before then. She seems genuinely hungry as she is a pretty easy going dog and is happy once she has eaten and isn't looking for more food that might.
My question is, is it normal for dogs to have a slow transition from 3 meals to 2? And is it a big deal if we hang on to that small lunch for a bit to get us through? She is about 35 lbs now if that matters. Will ask the vet next time but thought I'd ask here too. |
| Assuming she is a healthy six month old puppy, twice a day is fine. |

Huh...never knew at 6 months they still ate at 3 times per day. We've been feeding our 6 month old lab mix twice a day since she was 4 months old. She got 1.5 cups in the morning and 1.5 at night. She now gets 1 cup in the morning (roughly around 7:30am) and 1 cup at night (around 6:30pm) and hasn't had any issues with it. Shes 32 lbs and at the perfect weight according to our vet. We were told at 6 months, she should be eating between 1 1/2-2 1/4 cups per day so she gets 2 cups per day.
I'd just cold turkey move her to two meals a day. She will catch on quickly that she no longer gets fed middle of the day. |
