Expectant and Postpartum Moms
| Yesterday was a hard day. I went to the bathroom at 6:25 am and sat halfway in the dark, so when I wiped I thought it was my eyes adjusting to the darkness. But, I turned on the light and found that the toilet was covered in blood. I thought I was having a bad dream because I tried to call my Dr, but I kept hitting the wrong numbers on the phone and the second time, I dialed a wrong number. DH took the phone from me and immediately got through to my Dr. while I threw on clothes. Fortunately, our ER is only 10 minutes away, but I was sobbing when we arrived. As it turns out, the baby is okay, but my placenta is low and it is trying to move up into my uterus, but in doing so, it has created another big blood clot. They ran lots of blood work on me and gave me a big progesterone shot to calm my uterus. I'm at home now and on bed rest for the next several days or until the bleeding stops. I'm also trying to gage how much I'm bleeding, but it's hard because I always bleed like a faucet when I go to the bathroom and not so much on a pad. I go back and see my Dr tomorrow morning. Has anyone had this happen to them? I keep telling myself that "this too shall pass." I'd appreciate any kind of advice you can provide. |
I can't offer you any advice from my own experiences, but I wish you only the best. |

My coworker's wife had similar troubles. They had a scare like yours at around 16 weeks, and she was on bed rest for several weeks. I'm not exactly sure what was wrong but it did have something to do with her placenta and bleeding. I think she got off bed rest by week late 20s. She delivered a full term, healthy baby boy in December.
So there are success stories and I'm sure you will be one of them! |
| Aw, that's pretty scary! Sorry you have to go through this, and I hope it all turns out ok! |
| Please try to stay off your feet as much as possible. Some docs will tell you that it is perfectly normal, but blood clots (depending on its size, and adjacency to the placenta and membranes) can actually irritate the placenta and cause it to break apart. The chances are, you and your baby will be perfectly fine, but just be cautious and take it easy. Best wishes to you. |
| This happened to my cousin. The baby ended up fine after a rocky pregnancy. Best wishes and take it easy. |

I had marginal placenta previa at 17 weeks. I started spotting and passing small blood clots simultaneously. I was on limited activity for one week and couldn't lift my toddler (the absolute hardest thing in the world to not do). I kid you not, by the time I went in for my 20 week u/s, the placenta had already moved up quite a bit! I have not had an once of trouble since then (I am 31 weeks now) and I lug my 35 pound guy around routinely.
My coworker had a similar experience to yours. At around 16 weeks, she woke up covered in blood. Turns out that her placenta had developed a blood clot while moving up, like yours. She went on to have a beautiful daughter and when they delivered the placenta, the doctor noticed a large area with scar tissue on it. Her placenta healed itself and I am sure yours will too! Best of luck to you and rest all that you can. |
