Baby waking up more now that we started sleep training?

Anonymous
My seven month old used to wake up 2-3 times during the night, and I would nurse him back to bed or my husband would give a bottle. It was more for comfort than anything as most times he wouldn't take more than an ounce. We started sleep training with the Ferber method last Thursday and I think his sleep has actually gotten worse! He seems to have learned how to put himself back to bed, but is waking a lot more. Last night he was down at 6:45, fussed for about ten minutes beforehand. He was awake again at 12:30, 2, 3, and 4. The first three times he fussed a bit and feel back asleep writhin 5 minutes. At 4 I nursed him, he seemed to take a good amount, and then was back to sleep until 6:15. Anyone else who sleep trained had a regression like this? Our goal with Ferber was to help him get larger blocks of sleep, but no luck so far. He seems so grouchy during the day. Should we keep going or go back to feeding him during the night? Other ideas? Thanks!

Teething?

It could definitely be teething, he is biting on a lot of things. Apologies for the rookie question, but is there anything to do for that other than just wait it out? I know about the frozen teething rings, and that Tylenol is an option, but I don't know what the threshold is to give that vs. just letting him power through. I assume I wouldn't want to give that every day....

Our DD broke her first tooth 5 days ago at 9m. Before that, she had fussy instances that we (and lots of friends) attributed to "teething." We did not do anything about the former, but we could tell that it was different when the actual tooth came. We gave her Tylenol at night four nights in a row. It seems to have helped. You could try give her Tylenol. If she is not in pain, it won't make any difference, but if you see a significant impact, you know it helped. My understanding is that you should not give Tylenol on an empty stomach, so right after the evening bottle makes the most sense.

I would actually give motrin/advil for teething pain per our pediatrician. It lasts longer and is better because it reduces pain and inflammation - Tylenol is good for pain/fever reducing but does not help with inflammation.

Motrin is good to give before bed with a full tummy but should be avoided on an empty stomach. Tylenol is fine to give on an empty stomach. So usually motrin before bed (which lasts 6-8 hours) and then if your LO wakes after 6 hours fussy, give Tylenol in the middle of the night If you nurse him though, you could give more Motrin since he will have something in his belly.

No harm in trying it one night to see if it helps and if so, then you may have your answer. Our ped says to stick to only giving it 3 nights a week if possible.

Good luck!
