New to lacrosse -- apparently shooting string is too tight in lacrosse stick?

Anonymous
My 10 year old son is going to take a lacrosse camp this summer. I bought him an inexpensive stick at Dick's. My older nephew, who plays high school lacrosse, said the shooting string is too tight, and that's making my son's throws aim to the ground too much. Does that sound correct? And if so, where can I get it adjusted? Does someone at Dick's have the knowledge to do that? TIA.

If the head needs to be re-strung or if you just need a new head, then your best option is a lax store. There probably is one relatively close by you. Either post a general location here or google something like "lacrosse store" or "lax store" and see what comes up.

Someone may be able to do it at the camp (one of the camp counselors) but you don't know and it will be a hassle so it is best not to rely on that option. And you want it done before he goes anyway.

Thanks. I'm in Rockville.

The lacrosse store can't fix a stick from Dicks. If you child really want s to play lacrosse get a stick from the lacrosse store and have them string it.

Or ask the nephew for an old one.

Does your nephew know how to string a stick? Can he restring it for him?

Or just wait for the camp and get assistance from the coaches.

If you are in Rockville, go to Lacrosse Unlimited on the Pike and ask for their suggestion.

Is your son new to lacrosse? Are you sure it's the shooting string and and not his technique that is causing his throws aim to the ground?

I ask because my 9 year old daughter also plays lacrosse with a stick from Dick's. When she started playing, her throws would also aim to the ground. I have no idea if it was her shooting string that was causing it. I assumed it was shooting technique. This year - same stick - she is throwing much better and her throws aren't being aimed at the ground much. Definitely technique on her part.

A lacrosse stick is one of the few pieces of sports equipment where it is worth spending some money on the front end to get a properly strung stick. The off-the-rack sporting goods store sticks often make it extremely difficult to learn the game. Agree with the previous posters that the best option is to get a properly strung stick from a lacrosse specialist.

If the pocket has too much whip (making it throw into the ground), all you need to do is loosen the shooting strings. Start with the bottom shooter first and do a little wall ball with it until the ball comes out of the pocket smoothly. Too much whip -- shooting strings are too tight -- is a common problem that you can likely fix yourself. There are some good videos on adjusting whip on YouTube.

Just make sure your shooting string is not more than 4" from the top of the head of the stick when measured. That's a quick way to a penalty and easy way to get in a coach's doghouse
