Carry on vs. Pay per bag

Since airlines are charging per bag now, is it worthwhile to carry luggage on? Are most people carrying their luggage onboard making finding space for your bag more difficult than in the past? I'm wondering if I should just check luggage even if I don't have to if there will be less checked luggage now and a corresponding lower number of bags lost and shorter wait times for luggage to be retrieved.
