Midway between Kennenbunkport and DC

I'm going to be traveling with my 2 yo and my mom the end of of Sept. I'm looking to break the return from Kennenbunkport into a smaller piece. Any suggestions on locations that would be wonderful to visit that time of year. I'm thinking somewhere in Conn is my best bet, but am open to ideas. Don't really know the area so any help is appreciated.

Mystic has a great aquarium, and they have recreated a 1700s village. 2 is a little young, but I'm sure DC would love the aquarium. In any event, that's the only place I can think of that is on the route.

We were just in Mystic and it's a great town to stop! Enjoy that cool Maine air when you get to your destination.

Norwalk CT has an awesome kids' museum, the Stepping Stone, that's very close to I-95.

Norwalk also has a great aquarium- the Maritime Center. My 2 year old went last week while visiting the grnadparents and loved it.

Also, Rye playland is just off of 95 and has rides for the little kids- DD loved it.
