Infertility Support and Discussion
| I am very nervous. Any tips? |
| I had some very minor pinching during the procedure, but nothing to speak of. Much easier than an HSG, injections, or having blood drawn. I would compare it to having a pap smear. Good luck. |
| Agreed...minor pinching. It's basically the same level of discomfort and the same amount of time as a regular pelvic exam (including pap smear). |
| I couldn't tell that the doctors were doing anything. It was much easier than a pap for me. I'm sure you'll do great....wishing you luck! |
| Mine hurt really bad. |
| I had 5 and none of them hurt a bit. You'll be fine. |
| None - however, it feels like a pap smear. |
| Had 6 done- all like pap smear.. |
|
There is no need for it to hurt at all. We did multiple IUI's (yes, IUI's and not ICI's) at home and none of them hurt. One or two were vaguely uncomfortable but no pain.
An IUI is a procedure in which a very thin and flexible plastic catheter is inserted through your os, the opening of your cervix. When performed at your most fertile period, the os will be open much wider than normal at that point and lubricated with cervical mucous. However, if the sperm is inserted too quickly, it can cause uterine cramping. Your ob/re should press the plunger of the syringe (which is attached to the catheter) very slowly to minimize potential cramping. |

I think I have the world's most sensitive cervix-- I nearly weep every year when I have to get my annual exam. I still think my HSG was the worst pain I have ever felt. I wasn't able to relax at all and my doctor wouldn't give me anything for pain. Needless to say, I was terrifed about having an IUI.
It didn't hurt. At all. I swear. It was at worst slightly uncomfortable. |
| I've had 3 and at worst it felt like a pap. Two times didn't feel anything at all. Good luck! |
