| I'm SAH right now but I never. want. to. teach. again. It just wasn't for me. I have a M.Ed. but I feel limited by my degrees. Has anyone successfully switched things up? |
Yes, I re-trained. Was a math teacher so did an MSc in a math-related field with a view to leaving teaching. Chose a very practical course. Haven't looked back. |
| What age/subjects did you teach? What area of Ed was your Master's in? |
|
Not OP, but in the same boat. People have suggested I try everything from teaching a different age group, a different population (I am SPED), a different subject, to move from private to public. But the thing is, I despise being a teacher--no matter who or what. I don't know what I was thinking.
So I appreciate any advice as well. |
| What about administration or policy work? If you're passionate about education but just can't bear to be in the classroom, it might be a good option, especially given our location. There are lots of organizations doing interesting work in DC. |
|
OP here. Not passionate about education, especially policy or administration. I'd rather walk on flaming hot Legos in hell. I really just want out of the field.
Degrees were both in Early Childhood Education, which certifies you in pk-grade 3. |

Well, are you interested in kids at all?
Just asking because presumably at some point you were, to go into that field. If so, I might recommend looking at some non profits that focus on children's issues, advocacy organizations, etc. If you have a college degree and a master's, even in unrelated one, you should qualify and depending on years of work experience, may qualify for something mid-level, maybe in project coordination or management. If you are good at your job you can move up quickly. I feel like non profits are a little more "forgiving" than typical corporate culture, and if you are looking into children's issues, they may be okay with the idea that you have worked with children etc. |
| you can get a BSN in 18 months and become a nurse. |
| I hear you, OP. I'm working on a second Master's in a very different field, myself. |
|
Former PE teacher.
I'm going to nursing school. It will take me 3 years to get the BSN. I love teaching but the salary is not enough. I'm going to nursing school to work with family education and community nursing. |
| Thanks for the suggestions! You know, I like kids, I LOVE my own kids, but I hate teaching. A lot of people assume you are a bad person when you say that. I went into teaching, quite honestly, because I didn't know what I wanted to do and it seemed like an easy major. I like kids, but I think I really just wanted to be a mom. Now I want to be a mom with a job I like someday. |

I'm a former elementary teacher. I left teaching just before my first child was born. I tutored former students for about two years after that.
Admittedly, I loved teaching. I taught in a small private school setting that was very supportive. I left only because most of my salary would have been eaten up by childcare and because I only wanted to work part-time. 3 years ago kind of by accident I started an after school arts enrichment and arts camp business with a neighbor. Fast forward to today and we have classes in over 35 schools (public, independent and parochial) and next week we start a camp that has 100 kids enrolled. During the school year we have about 12 contracted instructors that work for us and in the summer we have a lot more. I have a love/hate relationship with it. I love the creative end with writing curriculum and I also love being in the classroom with the kids. Unfortunately, I don't get to be in the classroom enough because I am dealing with all the other facets that go into running your own business. What I dislike most is all the paperwork and email. I also stress about teachers not showing up, etc. Thankfully, that has not happened but I am a self-admitted control freak. When I taught at a school in a self contained classroom it was up to me to be on time, be prepared, etc. etc. etc. I'm still learning how to fully trust that others will do the same. We have 6-8 classes happening everyday in the afternoons and I can't be everywhere at once checking in. Anyhow, overall I love what I do and really believe in it. Good luck, OP! |
PP, I don't mean to hojack this thread, but I really wanted to ask you, because this is something I am thinking of doing. (not arts though.) I'm a teacher but don't want to go back to teaching. I want to use my skills and work for myself. But the problem I have is that every type of work I can find to do as a teacher, that isn't in school, is necessarily after school and during vacations. Which is just when I want to be with my OWN kids, because they are in school during the day so I don't see them then. I guess that's a no-brainer. But is that what you have found? While you are doing your after school enrichment classes, where are your own kids? Do they go to aftercare Get watched by a pouse, family member? Or come with you to the classes? |
| OP, what do you dislike most about teaching? |
| I have also taught and have my Master's in Education. I am a SAHM now and while I like the summers off idea, the BS that goes along w/ public school teaching has made me consider changing careers. I am not sure what to do either. I've sunk so much money into my degree that I don't want to spend any more money (money I don't have) to change. I don't like being the center or attention and being in charge of a large group of kids everyday. I think I would prefer to work one on one or w/ small groups of kids. I've thought about going back to school to become a SLP or an OT but it would take forever. Sigh. |
