I heard some parents talking about homework for their kindergarten age kids. I was surprised.
We are likely moving and renting in either Tuckahoe or Nottingham for the 2017-18 school year and wondered what to expect for the kindergarten - for homework and any other experiences you could share. thanks |

Depends on the school but the Arlington guideline for homework is maximum of 15 minutes of homework plus 15 minutes of reading/being read to.
My kids went to Long Branch and there was a no-homework-in-kindergarten policy |
| A lot of schools are eliminating homework in early grades. My APS 1st grader had no homework aside from reading this year. |
| My APS current K child has only occasional, optional homework. |
| DS had quite a lot of homework in K at ATS. We definitely put in more than 15 minutes a night (and the work did require parent help). DS has much less homework this year in first grade. |
| Teachers can't win. Parents will complain when there is homework, or they'll complain when there isn't. |
Do you keep a giant crucifix in your classroom as a reminder of your martyrdom? |
Our experience at McKinley. K had 20min of reading per night, and we were asked to keep a log. 1st grade 20min of reading to an adult per night, no log required. Rising second, we've been told it will be as minimal as possible. |
Agreed. There was a good article about this recently. People have different expectations. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/25/nyregion/homework-ban-new-york-city-schools.html?_r=0 |
| these posts are tiresome |
| We have a tiny bit in Wednesday nights at Nottingham. They tell you to skip it if you want. |
| My DS had homework starting in January in his APS K. (ASFS.) |
WTF? Screw the parents and do what's right for the kids. If you don't know what's right for kids, consult a teacher with early education experience to fill you in. Presumably someone at your school stays up-to-date on current research/approaches - even if you don't. |
| Kinders should not have homework, period. Everyone should be reading regularly to his/her own child. It's obnoxious some of you have a reading log. |
Because believe it or not, not all families do read to their kids every single day and definitely not for 20min per day. One 2min story at bedtime isn't enough. |
