| Can any current parents report on the principal search and on the recent possible weapon incident (reported here)? Please note, I am not asking about the uniforms, the cellphone tower, or any of the other concerns that a few people here always bring up. We are in-boundary and I would just like to know what's going on with these 2 particular issues. |
Everyone is in the dark on principal hires -- rumors that chancellor wants to make a single announcement with all new principal hires but they haven't yet filled all positions. Pretty lame if true. |

Hardy parents at the PTA meeting earlier this week were desperate for information on the gun incident.
No information was provided, which raised their stress levels. |
If accurate, that's disturbing. My understanding is that at Wilson, essential info about the gun incident last year was shared ASAP with parents. |
| The "gun incident" is 100% myth until it is confirmed. No one could confirm it on the last thread. |

What else do you need to know? From the letter posted within hours, the weapon was secured and two students were identified within 35 minutes.
Sounds to me like the systems they have in place work pretty well. I will guess that it was a student that reported that someone has a weapon. That student felt comfortable enough with Hardy staff to do the right thing and report it. If you're looking to find out how the students were disciplined, you won't and shouldn't know that. If you're looking for some guarantee that no student will ever bring in a weapon, you won't get that any school, whether Sidwell Friends or Hardy MS. All any school can do is to be proactive by putting systems in place and building strong relationships with students and being reactive the second they learn about an incident. Looks like Hardy did those things. --parent of a Hardy graduate and an incoming Hardy 6th grader |
Words of wisdom. Thanks! |

We think the weapon is not a gun. Had it been a gun, it would have been confiscated by the police. Instead the message said " the weapon has been secured into the school safety box" .
In my view the school is great and safe, with the exception of 2-3 students in each grade, which in our view do not belong to a normal school community, and would need to be moved to a different setting for the sake of their future and for preserving the harmony of the community. I know that there's little the school administration can do (since DCPS has not set in place instruments for special education or isolation of severely disturbed or violent kids) but almost nothing has been attempted to let them go. How do you know "almost nothing has been attempted to let them go?" Are you also a teacher or administrator there? How would you have this information? |
| Great hire by Hardy. Congrats to the selection committee on getting a top candidate, and their top candidate. |
Who? Name please |
Lucas Cooke. Asst Principal at Eastern |
He was a principal at a MS in Brooklyn (NY), had rave reviews there, moved to DC for family, and wowed the selection panel. They thought he was the perfect fit. |
| PP above, were you on the panel. Can you say with certainty that he was the panel's top pick? If so, terrific. |
