Okay, we have a situation on our hands. We live in MD and our house will be on the market in 2 weeks. We hope we can sell it soon and close soon before school starts. We will have to rent after closing and we are thinking to rent in VA. My kid will be 5 before school starts, so if we rent in VA (Fairfax County) we want to register DC for kindergarten. I have a few questions:
1) Can we register for Kindergarten after the school starts and after we move to VA? Basically, I am asking if schools in Fairfax will accept students in the Fall - Is there a deadline for when kids can start school. Lets say we move only in October, will my child be eligible to start K? 2) Should we have lived 2 months in Fairfax before we are eligible for K, or is proof of new address(lease) after move sufficient even if we have just moved. As of now, we cannot register because we do not which school to register at (as we do not have a Fairfax address). We have not registered our child for K in MD because we miss the cutoff in MD but are still eligible for cutoff in VA. (September kid) |

you can register whenever you have a signed lease or contract on a house.... whenever that is, even if school has started. If your child is shown to reside in Ffx Cnty, she is entitled to be admitted to the school for that zone.
The schools will typically be happy if you give them some lead time by showing them your lease (before you actually move) so that they can prepare for your child to be in their school. 1. get a lease or contract for a house 2. make an appointment with the school registrar 3. bring the lease/contract to the appointment. 4. Once you move, bring the child to school and bring the deed (if you purchase) or some mail/utilities bills if you rent to show that you actually live there. |
Thanks for this info. Since we can only rent after we have a closing, we won't be having a lease till after closing and that could be very late - Even if our house gets an offer in July, there will be the home inspection and then closing - which could very well drag into end of October..Will FCPS accept K kids that late - say end of October/early November. Is there no deadline date for enrolling in a school? |

OP here - we plan to rent back our home 1 month, so we can then move out wherever we want to..We have heard of some closings not happening as scheduled, so don't want to commit elsewhere till closing happens.
Of course if stars aligned and the house is off our hands before school starts, it would make our life easier. |
Correct. |
Thanks so much. and wow, that is great news if there is no deadline for enrolling - at least we won't have the pressure to rush into something |
There is never a deadline anywhere for enrolling in public school - if there was, kids would be without a school, and at home, for perhaps the better part of a year! Many people have to move in other months than late Spring/summer, happens all the time! Think about it! |
| Kids move mid-year all the time. No big deal. |
| Here is everything you need for registering a student in FCPS. As PPs have sad, you can register your child anytime. If I were you, I'd get the required physical done now and have the FCPS form with you so it can be signed. Also have the form for Maryland. https://www.fcps.edu/registration/general-registration-requirements |

OP here..Thanks for the replies.
@14:10 @14:30 Now that I think about it, yes, kids would be without school if there were a deadline..I guess I was thinking along the lines of preschool registration and spots filling up..But public school is different. @14:37 Thanks for the link. I will look into it. |
