Melanoma?

Anonymous
Does anyone have a good dermatologist that deals with this. My husband got diagnosed and we are looking for a second opinion. Do any use a dermascope or similar where they can look at moles to see them up close without cutting them off? Thanks

Good luck.

I also go to Dr. Stolar and like him, but recently I saw another thread about him somewhere on this forum and there were some very negative comments.

Responder here. I didn't see that thread, but I have no reason to find problem, and neither has my Dad, who has been seeing him for decades. I would, however, avoid his partner Dr. Perkins. I don't like him at all.

I suggest you check out ratemds.com and yelp.com reviews before choosing your dr. Very helpful comments.

He is very highly rated and was listed as one of the top docs in the Washingtonian.

I'm very sorry your husband got that diagnosis. I highly recommend calling The Melanoma Center at Washington Hospital Center.

They do use dermascopes there. Best of luck to you and your husband.

OP I would not spend to much time shopping around for another dermatologist. The pathologist makes (made) the diagnosis, the oncology surgeon takes off the tumor.

No local names to recommend, but I want to say don't settle for a regular old dermotologist. Go to someone working in a cancer center. My father is fighting melanoma and is very pleased with his docs at Dana-Farber Harvard Cancer Center in Boston. They are the real specialists, while the dermotologist that had been burning little spots off of him for decades just wasn't up to the task of saving my father's life. It's so great that the docs at Dana-Farber are all in one building and know each other. He goes there all the time and sees all of them in one day and they all work together very well. I hope you can find the same set up here.

Good luck.

To the 22:25 poster. Is there anyone at WHC that you recommend?

Sorry, to hear of your husband's diagnosis. Below is a great resource for all cancer types.

Dr. Peck was my doctor but he "semi-retired" on July 1. He is referring most of his patients to Dr. Venna, whose qualifications seem impressive. He will be the new director of The Melanoma Center. Phone number to make appts. is 202-877-2551 - the woman who makes the appointments is Monica McMillan.

I recommended The Melanoma Center because their work is so narrowly focused on melanoma (as opposed to other more common types of skin cancer).

Again, good luck with everything. If WHC doesn't work out for you, I might look into Hopkins to see if they have a good dermatology dept.?

22:25 again. To OP, check out Hopkins' cancer center here:

I hope you can compare it to WHC online.
