Best PSAT 8/9 Prep

I'm hoping to get my rising 8th grader to study for the PSAT 8/9 and into the Science and Tech program at Roosevelt. Parents, did you child get into the program and what test prep books and web sites were most helpful?

Are there any practice tests online? All I see oh Khan Academy are practice tests for the PSAT for 11th graders. Am I missing something?

Khan academy is probably the best visual learning tool. Kaplan has a good book I believe. And there's also InnovativeTestPrep.com that I have heard of.

Last year was the first year they used the PSAT 8/9 for an admission test. Prior to that there was some test used but they never told us what it was!

The PSAT 8/9 isn't used for a lot of high stakes purposes so it is hard to find test practice for it!

Here's a booklet with some sample questions:

There is a program at University Park Elem every year that helps students study for that test.

They helped students study for the old test (which no one actually knew what it was). The PSAT 8/9 is being used for the first time now for admission.

They used the PSAT 8/9 last year and people used that program to study still.

Both of my kids attended Roosevelt and the youngest just graduated. The PSAT is worth investing time and and energy in beyond the ERHS test since it is also used by colleges to recruit highly qualified students and is the qualifying test for National Merit status. It's well worth developing a comfort level with this test.

University Park's study group has admitted students outside of the immediate area when space permits, but there are also study groups in Bowie and Laurel sometimes.

Where are the study groups in Laurel and Bowie? How can I find more information?

Does anyone knows the name of the organization who runs this program?
I just called the school and they have no idea.

Any input is highly appreciated.

Thanks...!

That's weird, I called them when my child was applying and they told me where to apply, but that was some time ago so I forgot what it was called. I'm pretty sure they started at the beginning of the year so check with them in August or September I guess.

Now isn't the time of year for the test prep course at Univerity Park elementary school. Call at the beginning of the school. The school secretary should be about to connect you to the organizers. One of the school teachers is the instructor and I think it's run by the PTSA.

But really, now that the county is using the PSAT, you can go anywhere for test prep.
