| I am starting to research pk3 schools and would like to visit them earlier than later since I am due with my second child in December and am concerned I won't be able to visit many school open houses in November-January. I went on a few school websites and it seems that open houses are only scheduled during that time. Any advice or thoughts on whether they might start scheduling open houses this summer or how to otherwise visit schools? |
| Open houses are scheduled during lottery season, which is generally November-January. There are also a handful of open houses that happen after the lottery results come out but before the enrollment deadline (so April, basically). At our school, we generally come up with the open house schedule in late September/early October of the school year. There will not be anything over the summer and it's not a good time to see what's going on in schools anyway. |
|
Schools are letting out this week or next. No one will schedule open houses over the summer.
If you go to EdFest you can get a lot of questions answered at once. Do you have a spouse? Plan on having them do the open house legwork for your family. |
| Also don't kill yourself going to open houses. The odds are you will not get into most schools. Visit your IB and then spend your time looking for a private backup option if you can afford it. |
| My in boundary is really bad and we wouldn't send our child there, but thanks to everyone for reaffirming the lack of open houses until the fall |
There are very few IBs that are "very bad" for ECE. |
Then you need to be considering moving or whether you can pay for private school for two children. The chances of getting in via the lottery are very slim. What is your IB school? How do you know it's "very bad"? |
Yes. My son goes to a "very bad" school and the ece program is amazing. We love it. |
True, but it's the opening gate for the schools everyone loves. Read between the lines: apparently, charters enroll more students than DCPS for PreK (we already know they enroll more middle schoolers, now they own ECE). IOW, if you don't get into LAMB or YY or MV for Prek, you'll hang out at your loser local DCPS and then leave the system. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/education/wp/2017/06/02/the-pre-k-boom-in-d-c-can-it-help-end-school-segregation/?utm_term=.9e906cd926dd |
Of course you do. It's hard to ruin ECE. How do you feel about the very bad testing scores in the learning grades and the influence of low expectations on your son's idea of education? I have high expectations, but YMMV. |
Then move. Seriously. Why did you move in bounds for a school that is "really bad" and doesn't meet your "high expectations" in the first place? |
| You sound insufferable and judgemental. I hope you lose in the lottery. |
Whom are you typing at? Why should I move? My family loves our school. We made good choices. |
There are many in Feb. and March and I always saw many small babies in ergos on tours/visits. |
Are you assuming I don't have high expectations for my son? We have jobs that have us move every 3 years so my son will not be in dcps in two years. Please take your assumptions somewhere else. I was just adding that even "bad schools" have good ece programs. |
