Excuse my ignorant questions about school supplies

Anonymous
DD and I bought the school supplies on the Oyster kindergarten list this weekend. Couple of questions:

(1) what is a "beginner" pencil?
(2) what do you do with the supplies to start with? Bring them all to school the first day? Wait for the teachers to ask for them?

I can't believe that I have a JD and am finding kindergarten so challenging already. Yikes.

A beginner pencil is one of those fat ones and you take the supplies on the first day of school.

A properly drafted statute would have a definition of beginner pencil in Section 101 of the relevant Article, which is why you are confused.

Tee hee. I too have a JD and wondered about when the supplies are supposed to go to school.

Send them on the first day.

Should they all be labeled?

No need to label supplies - and thank goodness for that. With three kids, it would take me six weeks to get their names on all the stuff we are expected to buy for them!

Thanks for asking the question; as I was also curious about the same things (have two masters degrees and only one child starting K). So you send the supplies to school on the first day of school? I assume then it is the teacher that doles them out throughout the year to the students and also worries about storing them.

Very interesting, and to be honest... odd.

School supplies are shared in kindergarten (and, I think, in several later grades, too). So if the kids are cutting things out, they don't use their individual scissors but share from those in a bin. The teacher labeled the few things that my child alone used (a folder used to send home info, a composition book for homework).

I think this makes good sense, especially since the kids don't tend to have individual desks at this age--they rotate between activities at different tables.

Our school asked all the parents to write a check for school supplies and they'll put the money together and buy the exact supplies the teachers want and need for the whole class. They'll have a little bank to draw on throughout the year when they need to buy more or buy something new. I LOVE it! You might want to pass the suggestion along to your PA.

A silly question but I'm curious... Where did you go to buy all these supplies? Did you find a store that had all of them?

Target

Target did not have the;
- Beginner Pencils
- Fiskars Scissors
- and very large packets of colored paper

on the K List.

Target is usually our first stop. We pick up anything not available at Target at a Staples/ Office Depot sort of place.

I found the Fiskars scissors in the office supplies aisle at Target.

I got the beginner pencils and ream of colored paper at Staples.
