Go down the street to Santa Rosa Beach - much less crowded.
It's inbetween Destin and Seaside. Seaside is gorgeous and fun - if you can afford it rent a cottage there.

Shhh. We try to send all of the Washingtonians to Destin and Seaside. That's why Santa Rosa isn't crowded.

Harborwalk (maybe pricey) located directly by the bridge of Destin is also a nice place to stay with kids. Lots of entertainment such as pools, rock walls, zip lining. The same as Sandestin but you will also be close to the harbor where you could rent a pontoon, pirate ship cruise, wave runners, crab island, etc.

There are also numerous restaurants that are fun for the kids and goofy golf, and go carts (my kids LOVeD the Big kahunas water park) in the middle of Destin as well if you just want to rent a hotel with a pool somewhere. In the middle of Destin you would be close to shopping and golfing beaches more kids entertainment as well.

Old 98 is past mid bay bridge and lots of condo options with pools and a few restaurants. You could rent bikes and have a few beach sports. Close to shopping at Destin Commons shopping (foot of mid bay bridge) or the outlets close to Sandestin.

If you can find a home by vrbo or a rental company near or in sandestin, you can take a tram from one side of Sandestin to the other. Think beach and fun then take a tram to shopping then to bayside for nightlife zipline rockwalls, nature hikes tennis courts etc.

Further out you have Walton a county and 30A and Santa Rosa which is quiet and more peaceful. Not a ton for kids but maybe rent a bike quaint shopping. Then Seaside to the west.

If I were you I would find a rental company and rent a condo in the middle of Destin so you are centeralizef for the kids fun. Of course there will be traffic but it's better than trying to drive in everyday to reach a point of interest for the kids.

Then you can drive to Seaside one day for a picnic concert on the lawn and food trucks and dinner at Bud and Alleys.

Have fun!

Do you drive to Destin? I see it's nearly 15 hours from our area. Do you break it up? Where is a good place to spend the night on the way?

OP here- I have two weeks off in August. Thinking of driving down from D.C. area to Florida, spending a week with family in Jacksonville. Then driving from Jacksonville to Destin, spending 3 nights in Destin and then driving back to D.C. We would do the trip to and from Florida is two days. Is that too long to drive with children (7 and 8 years)?

I'm searching in VRBO and can't find listings that specify condo is in the middle of Destin. Is there a major attraction that is there so I search it that way. We would rather stay be in a centralized location.
