I just read a profile of the head of the CDC, and he's Trump appointee hack with a really sordid history when it comes to infectious disease. The CDC is full of brilliant scientists and doctors doing their best, but the guy at the top seems to be just what you'd expect of a Trump official.

And he gave an embarrassing “dear leader” plug at the press conference yesterday. I am a physician and have talked with many colleagues who are aghast at how quickly trust in and respect for the cdc has plummeted in the estimation of the medical community. Decades of esteem squandered.

Elections have consequences.

Yes, in this case that large swaths of the medical community have gone from holding the cdc in the highest esteem to thinking of them as some mix of ineffectual plodders and grotesque sycophants.

That press conference was one of the most nauseating things I have ever seen. The way that guy looked at trump was absolutely disgusting. People are dying and all he wants to do is kiss the presidents butt.

I read something about how a person who was at the villages event called to see if they should be tested. And were told only if they developed symptoms. I thought there was asymptotic transmission. I feel like they aren’t doing all they could be. I predict community transmission is confirmed in the next few days

The CDC is recommending that seniors 60+ and those with medical conditions stay home and avoid crowds as much as possible starting now.

From https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/health/maryland-officials-coronavirus-risk-at-retirement-community/2233549/:
Anyone who attended the gathering between noon and 6 p.m. should watch for symptoms like fever, cold-like symptoms, coughing, difficulty breathing and shortness of breath until March 13. They should check their temperature twice a day. Anyone who develops symptoms should contact their health care provider and health department to get instructions about testing and care.

What medical conditions?

Asthma? diabetes? High blood pressure? Weakened immune system? People on biologics like Humaria? HIV+?

That’s like half the country.

Yes these people too! They keep casually saying “underlying health conditions” like it’s just a few people. There are a lot of people with a lot of living to do yet who are at risk. Also people getting cancer treatment for fully curable cancers - so many people! Everyone should be doing their part not to spread this.

So sorry for everyone exposed..

Maryland's health department on Friday announced a potential risk of exposure to the new coronavirus at a retirement community in Rockville.

One of the three people who has been confirmed in Maryland to have the COVID-19 virus attended at gathering at The Village at Rockville Feb. 28, Gov. Larry Hogan said at a news conference.

The time period of risk of exposure was from noon to 6 p.m. that day, the governor said. Between 70 and 100 people who attended the event may be at some risk for acquiring COVID-19, Hogan said.

A woman whose 89-year-old father lives at the retirement community said she and her 12-year-old daughter were visiting Friday evening when they heard Hogan warn of the possible risk on the news.

“I’m in my father’s room, he’s eating his dinner, he’s a double amputee, he’s 89 years old,” Peggy Weldon said. “And on comes Gov. Hogan to make the announcement. I’m sitting there with my 12-year-old daughter, and we hear Gov. Hogan say, ‘The Villages at Rockville.’ I go and talk to the nurse staff. They weren’t aware of it. I told them. I said, ‘You folks need to have masks.’”

I am the PP who mentioned that Robert frost middle school has an after school club where students visit the residents. I just found out that they did go this past Wednesday. So more kids are exposed.

Kids having symptoms are not the issue, they're the least affected cohort. The reports suggest that kids usually manifest as asymptomatic carriers, which is the main issue.

A relatively small thing but why can't they update their Web site on weekends? They will be at least hundreds of US cases out of date by Monday, especially since those Grand Princess passengers will be docking somewhere "non-commercial" this weekends and will have to be added in. And the previous Grand Princess passengers are popping up positive all over the US and Canada. It will look like a blood bath on Monday and possibly cause a nationwide panic. Even since Friday noon, the number of states with cases has increased a lot. Might be worth the trouble to update this weekend.

THIS! Especially when you think of Monday morning's potential metro/office/school germ sharing events that Americans would be spared if we had an update on Sunday.

What we are seeing is different responses from different jurisdictions and states. The MOCO 3 from the Nile River cruise? Coronavirus was a hot topic when they went on the cruise - 1 has been to a private event in PA that precipitated the closure of 5 schools for deep cleaning in Bucks County PA. Philly estimates 400k in free meals not prepared at school sites for closures. MOCO? Bring students from closed schools to central sites for free meals. San Francisco closed the Opera House and at least 1 school. I MOCO Nile river cruiser went to a nursing home in MOCO and the daughter of a patient discovered that watching the news …

https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/health/maryland...-retirement-community/2233549/

Bottom line is Bucks County PA closed 5 schools, planned deep cleaning, notified all while MOCO diddled away. MOCO knew about it by 3/5/20 - how hard was it to get basic info like the nursing home? Is MOCO to PC compared to Bucks that I can't behave sensibly with this virus? https://www.mymcmedia.org/elrich-to-offer-update-on-montgomery-county-coronavirus-cases-friday-morning/

Drumpf and his fools pushed out top leaders of the pandemic team and cut funding. Every time a microphone is put in front of his doughy orange glob of a noggin, a rush of ignorant, inane garbage flows out. He is a germaphobe and loses his mind if anyone coughs around him. How can anyone with 2 functioning brain cells still support this narcissistic idiot.

I thought he came across as very smug in the press conference. Almost seemed like he was smirking most of the time - as if the American public is all a bunch of dum dums.

I was there this morning. Each and every person who walks in must fill out a questionnaire and has their temp taken. Residents’ temps are taken twice a day. Nobody there is currently symptomatic. The event that the coronavirus patient attended was in one room so health dept. believes risk is low and have not instructed quarantines, unless symptomatic.

I see you mentioned the person who called had been at the event. Yes, health dept. not recommending self-quarantine unless symptoms arise. I can only speak to the actual facility and what it was like there this morning.
