smelly workout clothes

Anonymous
DH sweats a ton when he works out. The smell of his workout clothes post exercise make me want to gag, and they stink up the bathroom or whatever room he hangs them in to dry. (It gives me the heaves thinking about the smell if the clothes sit in his gym bag all day long, which happens sometimes). I don't think it is practical to insist that he wash gym clothes every day, but I really think he needs to do something (hang them outside maybe? although not practical on rainy days) Any ideas from those who also have this problem?

Wtf? Of course he needs to wash them every day. And drink a lot more water and eat a healthier diet from the sounds of things.

That would make me gag too. Tell him they stink!

Yes he needs to wash them. My dh also sweats profusely. He washed his clothes with him in the shower after the workout or evening with wipes and hands dry. Then washing machine once a week.

What??? Is he not washing them with detergent after he works out? And he's a smeller? Please, for those that go to his gym, insist that he wash his clothes after every workout. If still smelly, wash with white vinegar once a week too.

Your DH is a jerk.

Signed,

Can he hang the clothes in the laundry room and do a load of wash every few days? Or I like the idea of rinsing them off when he takes a shower and then hanging to dry. That'll help with the sweat smell.

Otherwise, I'd get a large wet bag and make him put all his clothes in there until he does laundry. It'll get nasty real quick so it's in his best interest to do it regularly.

Maybe add some white vinegar to the wash to help rid the clothes of the smell.

Most likely it's more of a rinse off. He's rinsing his clothes in the shower, to get the smell off, then hanging to dry. And THEN washing in the machine once a week. He's not wearing the clothes again after the shower rinse.

I'm a woman whose exercise clothes are really stinky. I wash them everyday, as soon as I can make it to the machine (so, after work). I can't imagine re-wearing them! I'd gag at that, myself. I also throw all my workout stuff in a vinegar load once a month, and then dry in a patch of sunshine (can be done indoors, just need the UV light). I tend to like expensive stuff (especially sports bras and compression shorts), so I'm willing to do this. I have a friend who buys her stuff at target, Walmart, etc, and throws things away after three or four weeks.
I don't know what's up with my skin, as I don't have acne, drink a ton of water, and eat well compared to my peers. I drink alcohol 2-3 times a year, so that's not the issue. Maybe I've got lots of awesome skin flora? I've never had a skin infection, not even something like ringworm, in my life, despite years of going to the gym.

He needs to wash them better. Workout clothes build up a lot of gunk and need to be "stripped" once in a while - it helps release all the junk that builds up. We use RLR (https://www.amazon.com/RLR-Laundry-Treatment-Pack-10/dp/B007E29GV6) and there's no stink after my husband comes in from a run.

If you google, you'll find a lot of diaper washing advice - it's the same principle though - the fabric starts getting a buildup of stuff and bacteria hang on and stink things up. You need to do a deep clean once in a while!

A lot of the newer wicking fabrics just smell bad after a while, even after being washed. Cotton is much easier to keep clean and non-smelly.
