| How was your experience? Did you get services equal to, better or worse than what you had before? I know legally they are required to match but Im also asking in terms of quality. Thanks for whatever feedback you can provide! |
| FYI OP - they are only required to match for first month or so until they can complete their own evaluation. |
| It depends largely on the culture at that particular school. Some principals are not interested in having the best IEP teams, and it that case, they can cut corners and not have the best interest of the student in mind. |
| Depends on the school and your child's needs. One big difference is that in mcps, service hours can be done by the homeroom teacher (which is a joke) so there is a lot less time with the actual sped teacher compared to most districts. |
| Ah. This is not the feedback I was hoping to hear :/ |
| What school are you thinking of moving to? How many hours and what kinda of services does your child get now? How old is your child? |
Fallsmead/Frost/Wootton cluster. Elementary age. Not sure off top of my head hours. Would have to check. |
| We moved to MCPS from another state. They matched the IEP exactly as it was, at first. Then we were able to get way better services and a much better suited program after 30 days. |
Thats great! Glad it worked out for you guys pp! |
| Bad experience. Was polite and nice for far too long. In the end I had to get tough, hire an advocate and save my kid. |
We didn't move. Started in MCPS but this was our experience too. Expect to fight for everything! |
| OP here. Do you have to fight for everything even if you already have an IEP? Our beginning stages where we are now was super tough but once they got to know my kid, it got easier. We started this process in preschool. Does anyone think having a strong IEP already will make a difference? |
| OP, no one can tell you with certainty that you will have to fight over everything. Just be prepared for the worst. |
Also it really depends on what your child's needs are, and what you are seeking. For example, if your child has dyslexia, and you want daily 1:1 instruction in an O-G reading program, it's almost certainly going to be a fight. But even then, it varies by pyramid. |
You many need educational consultants. We struggled with Fallsmead to get anything, even 504. I am not sure how they actually in services but I am sure they will try to cut every corner possible. In our situation it was ridiculous since we tried to get services for MS (child was in 5th grade at that point.) Still it was huge battle. We got what we need but we would not get it without educational consultants. It was expensive battle. |
