Is Cancun a safe family destination?

Anonymous
Would you recommend it for one parent travelling with two children ages 5 and 7? We would stay at the Ritz-Carlton, which I understand is off the main strip and a little quieter. In addition to the food/water concerns, I am most concerned about safety. Some of the travel warnings from the State Dept are specifically about Mexico city and areas along the border, but I am still a little spooked. Just getting out of the airport sounds awful.

Anyone been recently or know someone who has and can give specific feedback regarding safety?

TIA

Cancun is beautiful and you do not have to worry at all, there is a lot of police around, enjoy !!

We went and stayed at the Ritz in Cancun this winter and it was lovely. Safety wise, nothing to worry about. The airport is a little bit hectic. If you want to spend the $$, the Ritz will arrange a pick up at the airport for you, which makes it easier.

Thanks! I know it's not safe to drink the water, but what about food in the hotel zone? Are there any foods to stay away from?

What about brushing your teeth and the kids accidently swallowing pool water?

You can brush your teeth and if the children swallow a little is not bad but never, never drink a lot of water, the restaurants are safe but ask for your drinks without ice. Food in general is fine IF is well cooked.

NP here. Curious about what you drink in Mexico if the water is not safe. Bottled water and drinks? Seems like the local water would touch everything from washing produce and preparing food to water in drinks bottled there.
