Changing jobs - vertical move

I'm not growing at all in my current position and experience-wise I am ready for the next step. Is it naive to think that I can make a vertical move by changing jobs - i.e. Do most companies prefer to hire someone moving laterally who has already been working at a similar job at the same level? Also hoping for a ~20% salary bump, as a $1k raise/year is not adding up and getting me anywhere.

People do that all the time. The salary bump will depend. 20% is a lot.

I make WELL under $100k so unfortunately it's not
