Bruce Monroe-v-Powell

Currently have a kid at BM and we are happy enough for another year. However, I am genuinally curious why BM doesnt get any attention but Powell dual language seems to be much more coveted or rated higher among families in the ? I know folks who got in a BM but later got spots at Powell ( years ago) and were thrilled to move to a different bilingual school. But when I look at the test scores, they are virtually the same and the racial make up is almost the same between the two schools. Is it that Powell is newly renovated? Not trying to pit one school against the other. I know they both have their pros and cons. But its always interesting to me how one school can get a good/bad reputation not based on anything other than talk on blogs etc. Maybe BM parents need to do a better job at messaging.

Powell had a very dynamic and well respected principal - but she left at the end of 2015-2016. I think that contributed to the buzz for a few years.

Dedicated parents, PTA etc.

This. Being a principal involves outreach, marketing, engagement. Not everyone can do this well, especially at a school with significantly different sub-populations.

That makes sense. The BM principal is good but she is definitely not interested in "marketing' to the IB, high SES families. that is painfully clear.

I'm sure the current Powell principal feels the same way.

I think a decent number of people know the positive about Powell, but what is the positive case for Bruce Monroe (at Park View, I know I have to add that)? I think that should be more widely known.

The thing about Powell is that they don't have to market to high-income families any more. They could, and it would just lengthen wait lists. So...

I would think Powell still needs some attraction for higher SES families to want to stay. The scores are poor and the MS path isn't pretty. There's every reason to plan to leave after PK.

Several high-ses families are at Powell up to 2nd grade. While there are some things that could be done better, families are still staying.

Maybe it's commute or striking out in the lottery. Who knows.

Maybe their kids are doing well there.

Doing well because of a lack of academic rigor really isn't doing well. This is one reason many well off families leave high poverty schools by 2nd grade. The achievement gap is just getting bigger each year.

Do you really think a parent judges "doing well" relative to others? I'm talking about doing well period. As in, learning and being challenged.

Doing well compared to what? Those asinine PARCC scores?

1. Competent parents can judge on their own relative to benchmarks.
2. Competent teachers can explain relative to benchmarks and common core standards.
3. PARCC on 3rd+ and other tests prior to 3rd can give insight too.
