I found this article on the challenges that a Baltimore Charter School was having with compensating teachers very interesting and thought that others might be interested in it as well.

Teachers at Ujima Village Academy earn salaries according to the Baltimore School System pay scale. This would not include compensation for additional daily work hours and Saturdays.

What is "+60"?

that's what the most senior teachers make. average is probably 65-75K. Do you think teachers should earn less?

librarians. very expensive credential. low pay and low status.

nurses and librarian don't get 2 months off a year plus extremely generous pension benefits (in my county at least the pension benefits are going to bankrupt the county in a few years).

Nurse Practitioner maybe, for those of us who are at the MA+60 level.

I'll admit the summer vacation is pretty nice. But that wasn't something that unions negotiated. If you want year-round schooling, it can be done. Most parents are not willing to give up summer vacation. It's a cultural tradition. What kind of vacation benefits do nurses and librarians get? I'm guessing nurses earn overtime.

As for the generous pension. I doubt that I could live on it. Did you know that DC teachers need to work summers in order to contribute to Social Security?

Nurses get the normal vacation, no summers off. It is a labor intensive profession, where many nurses develop some physical limitations later in life due to their profession. Higher education in nursing does not add much income to their salaries, except nurse anesthetists. For the most part, they are poorly compensated.

To be honest, I no longer feel to much sympathy for teachers when I look at those salaries. I am not a nurse, but I work with and hire them for an organization. Rain, snow, or shine they have to be there. No snow days off. Lots of work on public holidays and weekends. Little in the way of guaranteed pension, unless they work for the VA. And no way do they get summers off.
