My just turned 16 year old niece walks home alone (20 minute fast walk) after work in a not great part of the city she lives in. It is a high crime area but most of the crime is drug / gang related. However a young woman (she is tiny - about 105 pounds) walking home alone at night isn't particularly safe regardless of the area. She works a 4-10pm shift 3-4 times a week, then does clean up and usually leaves about 10:30 and gets home by 11:00. She is on the west coast so 3 hours behind me time wise or else I would keep her on the phone while she walks but I can't stay up until 2:00 as I get up at 5:30 for work. She doesn't have a good home life and parents don't care that she walks home alone, and have told her she isn't allowed to spend her money on a taxi / uber as they are too expensive and will use up her minimum wage pay (she gives them a $200 a month) plus she has a cell phone bill she pays and she buys herself meals at school and on the nights she works. She isn't keen on spending what she has left on taxis either. I have sent money in the past but her parents take it as they feel I spoil her and they want her to earn her money - not be given it.
I have bought her a personal alarm and pepper spray but I keep thinking she needs a light of some kind. She doesn't want to carry a flashlight as she has her phone in one hand and listens to music (in earbuds). I have told her that isn't safe either as she can't hear anyone around her but she likes her music. any suggestions on what kind of light might work? The personal alarm is a keychain on her bag. I am pretty sure the pepper spray is in her backpack and probably not much use. Any suggestions? |
