PARCC and homework

Anonymous
5th grader. Three days of PARCC end today, and the teacher told the kids yesterday she was assigning homework tonight. What the hell. I am sick of living in peak homework times. I am sick of homework. I actually look forward to PARCC testing because it's two weeks of no homework.

This is just the way it is, isn't it? I can't really complain? I feel like telling my DC screw it and don't do it, but that's not the right message to send I know. It would be shitty of me to complain to principal, wouldn't it? I just feel like screaming why the fuck are you assigning homework during the PARRC window? COME ON. (and yes, this is kid specific - my younger kid would just knock it out in 5 minutes - but this is my ADHD kid and it will be 45-60 minutes of hell to get it done).

Sounds like a perfectly reasonable concern to raise with the teacher and, depending on the response (and possibly the particular homework), the principal.

Homework is not the issue. PARCC is not the issue. Your child's ADHD combined with these two things is the issue. So yes, you absolutely should discuss your child's needs with his/her teacher.

Keep in mind that other kids have other needs too. Other parents may be complaining to the teacher about NOT giving homework during the PARCC window, so just focus on your kids when you talk to the teacher.

Any parents complaining about their children NOT getting homework should
(1) read the research
(2) buy their kids some books or go to the library
(3) stfu

It's not the teacher's responsibility to indirectly provide babysitting via worksheet.
