Best College Music Scened

Anonymous
We all know Athens, GA and Austin, TX are college towns known for their tremendous contributions to American music. What are other college towns out there that are known to have vibrant music scenes? This is important to the music major, but to the student who maybe has a side musical inclination or those who just enjoy a social scene that revolves around good music.

Nashville- Vanderbilt
Providence- Brown/RISD
Pittsburgh- Carnegie Mellon/U'Pitt
Madison- U'Wisconsin @ Madison

Big cities like LA/NYC/Chicago/Boston/SF are big enough to have robust music experiences. Plenty of school in those 5 cities.

Professor's wife here, so we've been living in college towns since leaving D.C.

Ann Arbor doesn't have a ton of local music, but the performance venues and festivals kind of make up for it. There are venues for every musical style, and lots and lots of free outdoor music day and night during the summer.

I'm in Columbia, MO now, and there's a thriving music scene here. We have a lot of local bands of every style from blues to metal, performance venues from small and intimate like Cafe Berlin to 9:30 Club-esque, like the Blue Note. We also have an awesome festival in late September every year called Roots Blues & BBQ, which pulls big-name acts (Avery Bros headlined last year, along with acts like Ben Folds, Grace Potter; this year, we're getting singers like Emmylou Harris), and smaller southern bands.

My daughter will be going to Rice next year, and I'm liking what I see of the Houston music scene. (I know and love both the Austin and Lubbock scenes, but we are new to Houston).

If you're into metal, Tampa supposedly has a major scene. Or, at least that was the case a few years ago.

Boston is nice, and has Berklee, but it's expensive, and the market is flooded with a million wannabe jazz guitarists.

I know it's a generic suggestion, but LA, Nashville and NYC (Brooklyn) are the biggest music scenes in the US. Not only for venues, but also for working with professional songwriting teams.

Lubbock has a music scene? Say more, please.
