Mexico in December

Anonymous
Family group (grandparents, two adults sisters & hubbies, and five grandkids ages 8-14) looking to spend the week BEFORE Christmas in Mexico, probably in the Yucatan/Quintana Roo area. First trip there. Have looked a bit at VRBO options but am overwhelmed by the choices. Any recommendations of good places to be based? We'd mostly be hanging out at the beach (and pool, if we can find a house that has one) and also do some hiking, a little low-key shopping, and and see some archaeological sites, ideally within an hour's drive.

OP here, bumping this question-- anyone??

Playa del Carmen, right on the beach. Lots of options for everyone - and the older ggrandchildren will love 5th Avenue.

No archaeological sites within an hour's drive - Tulum is too far south for that. Hiking, hmm, yeah, there's a cenote right near PDC that is a full mile from the front entrance to the actual pool. Quintana Roo isn't well known for hiking though...

Adding one more thing - December isn't quite balmy enough for the beach and the poool (not to me, anyway)

If you're looking to spend your Christmas somewhere hot, sunny and simply gorgeous, then Cozumel, Mexico is the place for you! With average temperatures of 24°C (75°F), and cool breezy nights at a low average of 20°C, this splendid island is the perfect spot for those who wish to enjoy summer in the heart of winter.Nov 12, 2014
