We are looking at homes that seem to have one bathroom on the main level that is in a bedroom/office.
Any ideas on what to do with that space? We wouldn't use it for a bedroom/guest room. And for privacy of our papers/work, wouldn't use it for an office. Looking for a creative thing to do with it. Most of the houses we've looked at don't have much storage space. thanks |
| Playroom, den? |

I assume it's intended as an office/guest room (or maybe a suite for a family member who can't manage stairs). It's hard to tell you what to do with it if you don't want to use it for its intended purpose. Pretend the bathroom isn't there?
"Our new house has a room with a refrigerator, stove, and sink, but we eat all our meals out. What should we do with it instead?" |
OP here. Thought about playroom, but didn't want to have to clear a path of toys, trains, legos, whatever for people to walk through. |
The house only has one bathroom on the main level, which is through a room. |
| I would do a library/reading room if you don't need it for guest or office space. We have a ton of books though - I'd love to have a devoted space for them! |
| Can you remove the door/framing and make it more open like a library or music room? It wouldn't seem so strange going through it to the bathroom. |

We had a room like that, although it was a 1/2 bath and no closet, so it didn't seem bedroomish.
We put the TV in there. |
| Just make it a den or a playroom. It's not a big deal. Teach your kids to keep a path clear between the bathroom and the door to the playroom. |
| T.v. room/office. Get a locking file cabinet and put it in the closet if you're worried about privacy. Maybe a desk with locking drawers, too. |
| How often do you really have people over? |
| Just make it a play room. If I were your guest I wouldn't care about some toys on the way to the bathroom., especially if it's contained within the room. I would expect you have more important things to worry about, and I say this as someone with no children. |
+1 I have two kids under 5, and it's not that big of a deal. |
| We have that set up in both houses. Here we use it as an office. In our summer house it's a guest room which works nicely for privacy (and we have a lot of guests there). The summer house also has a half bath on the main floor so we don't need to use the guest room bathroom. |
| Get an Au Pair and have that be her room. Excellent opportunity for your kids and to save tons on childcare. |
