| we maybe getting a house in another neigborhood but still within 1 mile from our current elementary school. Will they let us continue to attend our current school or make us start the new school? My kids have friends at current so less inclined to change. |

They are going to make you change, unless you can come up with a reason to pupil place and they approve it. My kids don't want to move is not a reason. They will probably let you finish this school year though.
https://www.fcps.edu/registration/student-transfers Basically, childcare, FCPS employee, going into their last year of ES (but only for the kid it applies to), and medical, psychological reasons are reasons you can request pupil placement. The medical psychological reasons have to be real, ongoing, documentsed and in treatment though. Not My kid wants, or My kid would be happier if. |
| What school system? |
| You can usually finish the school year. After that, it depends! |
| At our elementary school kids are usually allowed to finish out the year if more than half of the school year has passed, but that's it. |
| Figured. We're in APS. |
They'll let you finish the year. You might be able to request a transfer for the subsequent year but you'll be on the hook for transportation. |
Anecdotally, they seem willing to let most people finish out the school year if they have moved within APS but transfers to remain for future years (to finish at the school) are not guaranteed and much less likely in the age of overcrowding. We go to an elementary that is not choice per se but used to take transfers from a number of other schools but when our friends moved a few years ago they were only allowed to finish the school year and not stay on at the school because they had changed that policy due to overcrowding. |
