Recent Greenbriar East experiences

Anonymous
Typical question, but I'm hoping to get some info more recent than 2014.

We have a 6 year old daughter and are thinking of moving into the GBE school district. Some commenters on great schools complain about bullies at the school, and administration doing nothing or very little about it.

Do any GBE parents have similar experiences? Is bullying really a problem or not?

OP,
I have no information to give you. However, I would suggest that you be skeptical of commenters on any forum. As for bullies, there are bullies in every school. There are also parents in every school who think every kid who doesn't do what their kids like is a bully. I have known parents like this.
No question that bullying is a problem, but sometimes it is in the eye of the beholder.

Wow. This is toxic. I have been a parent of Greenbriar East for over 21 years. I no longer have kids there; but I walk my big dogs there everyday; get to know all the kids; have facebook friends who DO have kids there; and NEVER have heard about this. If I have; I would be one of those old ladies going in to volunteer to get a handle on this. We are special here in Greenbriar. We have a very special thing going; and proud to say our kids grow up to be very happy adults. We put houses on sale, and they go instantly, people are in a waiting line to get into our neighborhood. So this is very confusing and hope we can get to the bottom of this.

I have two children that attend Gretnbriar East school and it has been a great experience for us. I love the staff and know them well since I walk them to school. We did have a friend that would bully (last year) and I felt that the teacher and school counselor worked hard to address the situation for both parties. I was happy with their help and that they took it seriously. This is a great community!

I had children in the school from 2005 to 2016. During that time frame neither of my kids were ever bullied nor to my knowledge any of their friends. For most of those years I volunteered weekly in the school both in the classroom and for special events. I never witnessed any bullying. That said, I can not say it never happened because unfortunately I believe that it happens everywhere. However to say GBE has a bullying problem is inaccurate and unfair. The teachers and staff are top notch and my kids loved their time at GBE.

My child attended GBE from 2009-2016. The school has a 9/10 rating on Zillow for a good reason. The administration is strict but compassionate. We never experienced bullying issues. GBE and GBW both have very close knit school communities that are really quite special. Excellent school district!

My son attends GBE and we've been very happy with all of his teachers and counselor. The PTA is very active and hosts a lot of great events for the students/families. We haven't experienced any bullying issues personally, but I do know of an instance where a teacher was proactive in engaging the parents of two kids where she believed that the behavior exhibited by one towards the other could lead to bullying in the future.

We really appreciate the diverse and fun community we've found at GBE.

"There are also parents in every school who think every kid who doesn't do what their kids like is a bully." THAT is definitely true at GBE. I haven't experienced any kids that bully, just moms. If you're white, older, and conservative, you'll be fine.

OP Here.

I really appreciate the replies. Sorting out the signal from the noise is always hard when reading reviews--particularly of schools!

Sounds like GBE is a pretty typical school for Fairfax County. Same problems as anywhere, but I'm glad to hear the anecdotes of involved parents and administrators.

Any updates for GBE?

OP. There are always people in every school who believe their child is bullied. Frequently, their child is the bully. Don't pay attention to anonymous forums--even this one.

I would choose Greenbriar West over Greenbriar East if you can.

It's mediocre. Everyone I know who has been able to move has moved.
