Did you guys see Jimmy Kimmel talk about the birth of his son OMG!

He talks about the birth of his son and the discovery of a heart problem three hours later. Bring tissues, it is amazing!

I never paid much attention to him, but between this and his tearful tribute to Rodney Dangerfield, I'm falling completely in love with him.

It's interesting how some people have zero interest in or compassion for the plight of others until they personally suffer a crisis. Glad his baby is fine, and glad he's using his platform to raise awareness of the critical need for access to healthcare...but I wish everyone would simply support this commonsense approach to meeting basic human needs.

To be fair he said that he's been a supporter of Children's Hospital for a long time and never thought he would need to go there.

Pwerful stuff.

I've been a fan since the bit he did on his show about anti-vaxxers.

I've been very impressed by him over the last couple of years.

+1. He's been donating to LA Children's Hospital for years. See also the way he addressed childhood vaccines:

Yes, everyone that does not ceaselessly advocate your opinions is an amoral monster.

Thanks for the tissue warning, sitting here bawling. Thank goodness the baby will be ok and thank god for all of those medical professionals!

I'm not incredibly familiar with Jimmy Kimmel, but why are you assuming he has had "zero interest in or compassion for the plight of others"? He never struck me that way, and you sound very judgemental without cause here.

I never watch him but happened to turn on the TV in the middle of him talkimg about it on his show last night. I have a friend whose daughter has this condition. Its very scary and life threatning. Her daughter is an older teen now and she feels incredibly blessed. Its not been that long that children born like this have lived to see their teens.

Making charitable donations isn't the same as using your platform to champion a cause. Did he use his platform prior to the election to speak about access to healthcare? We're in a shitshow right now thanks to Trump.

All I'm saying is it's interesting that it often takes a personal issue to get people to make a stand. I wish it didn't. I wish everyone on the planet recognized that healthcare (like shelter, food and water) as a basic human right.

To be clear: I'm not really throwing rocks at kimmel. It's more an indictment on celebrities and society in general. Kinda like how conservatives magically come around on gay rights when their kid comes out of the closet.

Just because he didn't use his platform to speak about healthcare does not mean he didn't recognize it as a human right. There are a million different causes he could use his platform to promote but it's his choice. There is nothing wrong with a celebrity using their platform to promote issues that they have personal experience with. Doesn't mean they didn't care before.

It's very touching, but I can't help but think if a professional female host had spent that much time/emotion on the same topic, she would have been permanently pigeonholed professionally.

I hate that that comes to mind for me, but it's always really hard for me to see such significant differences in reaction when men and women do exactly the same actions in the workplace.

Glad his son is going to be okay. How terrifying.

I thought it was extremely powerful and very raw. He's using his platform for the greater good. I have three children with minor pre-existing conditions (food allergies and asthma) and worry about their chances for affordable, comprehensive health care when they turn 26.
