Do movies need to be downloaded to device to be watched?

| As title says - so confused about this. Lets say I buy my kids a movie on iTunes. Does it need to be downloaded on my iPad or iphone? Or can they watch it just because it is bought. I know this is a dumb question but please help me out. |

| iTunes is more of a download service, so it's good for airplanes or other places without streaming. You can delete them though and download them again on another device or in the future. |
