4 month old- cry it out? (Short periods?)

My daughter is addicted to her rock n play and will be 4 months in a couple days. She's slept there since she was a few weeks old. We got her a mini crib since space is an issue in our room, and she will not sleep in it. I haven't left her to cry in it yet. Is it ok to let her cry for 5-10 minutes when I am trying to put her down for the night or for a nap? Or should I sit next to her? She only goes down with a bottle. (We often have to feed her to sleep in the rock n play).

It is widely agreed that cry it out shouldn't even be considered until 6 months, at least.

I personally don't think that letting a 4 month old cry for 5 minutes is problematic.

That is not true, and even if it were, crying for 10 minutes is not cry it out.

OP, you are totally fine to leave her for 10-20 minute at this age. many doctors are fine with full extinction at 4 mo.

NP. Baloney pp. Op, no, you don't and you care for the helpless baby. When parents tell you ro ignore your needy baby, ignore those parents. No, it won't spoil the child, no it won't be abnormal, at least not for the rest of the countries of the world where they don't chat about how quickly they can ignore their child's cries. Just love and care for the baby and find ways to cope with your faigue if you can. Good luck.

Letting your baby cry for 5 minutes, and coming back to them just teaches them that they should persevere, that eventually it works.

If you don't plan to stick it out, then I wouldn't do it, barring circumstances where you don't have a choice (e.g. you're sitting down on the toilet and baby starts to howl, or you have another child who needs you).

I don't think a 4 month old knows any level of manipulation as PP above suggests. I think a few minutes is ok to start getting them used to the crib. You can sit in the room or stand over the crib with them so they know they aren't alone, sing or hum, etc.

OP, candokiddo.com has a great article on transitioning baby from rock n play (or other baby holding equipment) to a flat surface for sleep. Hopefully this will help you avoid having to let baby just cry.

+1, and it's fine to let them cry longer too. We did full on CIO with both kids over 2-3 nights at 4 months. No adverse effects that we can tell. They both sleep 8-8 now.

I don't think the baby will "learn" to keep crying past 5 minutes if you periodically try to see if they can self-soothe.

I remember one time, early on, needing to put my baby down to run to the bathroom. And I felt awful for leaving my crying baby. Except, he was sound asleep by the time I got back which was probably about 5 minutes later.

Everyone has their limits on what they can and can't handle. I'm not someone who could handle doing full on CIO, but just giving a kid 5 minutes to settle is not CIO at all.

we did it at 4.5 months, took 3 nights and then done. Put herself to sleep every night since.

OP go read the "put in crib and walk away" thread. People saying you can't let a 4 mo cry for 10 minutes here are extreme.

I had my DC2's 4-month check up today and the pediatrician gave us the green light for sleep training (we aren't ready to do it though), and also said that if she takes 20-minute cat naps (which she does), to try letting her cry for 5-7 minutes to see if she'll go back to sleep.
