| Can a sibling at a DCI feeder confer preference on an older sibling for middle school at DCI? E.g. DD5 gets into Mundo Verde, does that mean DD11 counts as a sibling for 6th grade at DCI? |
I think so. It's not the case at every feeder (I know LAMB declined to do this because they didn't want to create another preference that would make it even harder for people to get into LAMB) but seems to be the case for MV. From DCI FAQ Does DCI have sibling preference? DCI has sibling preference within DCI, as well as with some member schools. Sibling preference can only be approved for siblings in the same language track. MV http://www.mundoverdepcs.org/admissions/ |

(sorry, hit "save" too soon) If an older child attends DCI now, even if they got to DCI via YY, that doesn't mean an incoming sib would get preference at YY. Granted, that might not affect very many families (most don't have a middle-schooler and then someone applying to pre-school) but it could happen that a DCI younger sib might not actually get preference. (Since we have Irish twins, I sort of envy those families where a younger one can look after an older one. I guess this is a situation where listening to my DCs needle each other because they're close in age definitely worked in our favor.) YY is one of the schools that offers teacher/staff preference. I don't know if it applies at DCI as well. |

Hi all,
Yep! DCI has reciprocal preferences with 3 of our 5 feeders: Yu Ying, DC Bilingual, and Mundo Verde. Check back every lottery cycle though, as this can change. Sibling preference is not a guarantee, but it will bump siblings to the top of the waitlist. It's also only applicable within the same language track. This means that if a student is accepted in 6th grade to our Chinese track, his or her siblings would have sibling preference at Yu Ying (they would only be able to get in if Yu Ying has open seats for that grade, is able to take more students off the waitlist, etc.). This also works in reverse - a YY student's older sibling can be bumped to the top of DCI's waitlist. Hope this helps! |
Do these three schools also have reciprocal staff preferences -- meaning if you teach at MV can your children get a staff preference for DCI (and vice versa) |
Thank you! Does the language track rule apply to the older student being bumped? |
yes - so essentially there must be a family language |
Oh that is sad... so if DD4 gets into Yu Ying and DD10 is in dual language Spanish somewhere, no dice? |
Right - see highlighted section above. DD 10 could start Chinese at DCI. But can't do Spanish. |
Oh ok, I get it. Each school has a certain number of spots, ish, basically. Do folks think this system will endure, or will it not be sustainable as feeders expand? |
Yes, reciprocal sibling and reciprocal staff preference are both applicable! |
Correct. In this scenario, the older sibling would only be moved to the top of the waitlist for the Chinese track. |
