No interest in drawing

Five year old boy who has just about started writing letters has ZERO interest in drawing/art. Any ideas how I can help him in the area? Tracing is something he enjoys but copying things I draw seems hard.

Copying is going to be very hard and likely really frustrating.

He should work on simple shapes and make them very very large.

Does your child work with an OT? If so, ask them for suggestions and homework.

My son who struggled with art / copying at that age has dysgraphia. He enjoys art now at 9 but it took time, practice and OT to gain confidence. How about making things out of clay - those were the first projects my son enjoyed.

DS is 12 and it's quite difficult for him to create something he's happy with - which is why he doesn't like to do it, which is why he's not getting any better. Vicious cycle. He has severe ADHD, dysgraphia, and overall poor coordination and spatial awareness.

All I insisted on when he was your son's age was handwriting, which is important for school and work. He worked so much on writing that at the end of the day I couldn't force him to like drawing too. Pick your battles, and all that.

My son hates it, and always has. He's 9 now. Have him start building Legos to improve his fine motor skills.

Give it time. My son didn't start writing till age 5 and we worked on it a lot at home and he writes really well. You may want a few OT sessions for holding a pencil if that is an issue. Some kids never draw or color well. Mine finally got into drawing around age 7 but his coloring skills are pretty bad (I don't care or I'd work on it). He draws better than me so I figure that is good enough.

He doesn't need to like art or drawing. Find other ways to help him develop fine motor skills:

Use a program called Read Write Draw to help him learn to draw basic things. If he doesn't like to draw, that's okay, so long as he can when required to in class, like to illustrate a vocabulary word.
