Newport, RI

Job prospect in Newport, RI. Tell me what you know about living near there. 30 min or less commute. Tell me about communities. We have two kids - one elementary age with special needs. One going to middle school. We are Jewish. We like diversity. We don't want our kids to be the only Jewish kids in school. Affordability compared to dc is important. Housing budget will be $600k max.

I have family who live in Jamestown, RI, which is the island across the Newport Bridge. Jamestown is a fantastic place for a family to live, but I'm not sure how far $600K would take you. It might be worth checking, though.

North Kingstown would be significantly cheaper than Jamestown, but then you would have to cross two bridges to get to Newport (the Jamestown Bridge and the Newport Bridge).

Your best bet is probably to look in Newport proper and Middletown (which is adjacent to Newport and not separated by water). Portsmouth would work, too.

I spent my childhood summers in Jamestown, and still visit most summers. Coastal RI is really lovely. As is coastal New England generally. I can't speak to jobs, houses, and schools much at this point, though.

Good luck!

We were in your shoes last fall, and decided to pass. We love New England, but Newport was just too rich/poor for us, and the schools aren't very strong. We had same house budget as you, and weren't impressed with what we could get. That being said, it's gorgeous there, and the beaches are lovely. Best of luck with your decision!

Op again: that's interesting! Where do you live in the D.C. Area and where did you look? Any other info about what you found would be great!

Try the city-data.com forums. We were nearly transferred there a few years ago, and I recall getting housing/schools advice on that site.

I would move to Rhode Island in a heartbeat but haven't gotten any job offers. Living in North Kingstown and driving across the two bridges is a pretty easy drive, less than a half hour. There is no traffic compared to DC. You can get a great house with good schools and easy commute in the 500s. If you turn down this job, maybe I can apply for it!

I grew up in Rhode Island. I agree with the PP who mentioned north kingstown. $600k will get you a nice house there and the commute will be about 30 minutes and the schools are good. Otherwise look into Portsmouth or Barrington but Barrington is pretty pricey. I love newport, especially in the summer. It's so pretty and there is so much to do.
