Late August Start Dates

Anonymous
We are new to DC. I come from a place where school starts after Labor Day, but we received notice from the school with a late August start date. Is this typical for DC, or just particular to charter schools? TIA.

It's typical here.

All public schools in DC start in August -- most privates start after labor day.

DCPS calendars for 17-18 -- you need to know if your school is on the extended or traditional calendar. https://dcps.dc.gov/page/dcps-calendars

Each charter sets its own calendar. Most have them on their websites for next year.

In these parts, Virginia schools are the only ones that start after Labor Day. Maryland and DC generally start in late August. Our school starts on 8/28 this year, the latest start date since our kids have been attending.

Not anymore. The governor of Maryland dictated that school can't start before Labor Day starting in SY 17-18.

Thats unusual and related to the Walter Reed construction. Prior to 17-18 they always started in August.

Lee staggers start dates for PK3 kids, so you could be after Labor Day, I'm guessing?
