I am looking into buying a smart TV for my home gym, which does not have a cable jack. With a smart TV, I think I could just log into Netflix etc to watch shows that way. Is there a smart TV brand that works best for this scenario (i.e. not a large computer display or for gaming, etc).
Thanks so much - I know nothing about technology! |
| You could just get Apple TV, a Firestick, or a Chromecast. These are streaming devices that will be much cheaper than a smart TV. Also, you'll be able to update apps as needed. (I recommend Apple TV.) |
I don't actually have a TV in the gym yet. So this would mean purchasing a (regular) TV as well as Apple TV...rather than one smart TV? |
You buy a regular tv and then an add-on (apple tv - this is not an actual TV, amazon firestick or chromecast) |

Be sure to research -- I bought a smart TV thinking all of the apps I would want would be built in. I was wrong.
My smart TV has several of the apps, but not all of them. I have to use a Roku to get all of the streaming apps I want. What specific apps do you want to use? How much do you want to spend on a TV? How large of a screen do you want? |
I can fit a 32" where a mount already exists in the mirrored wall - not going to change that. Prefer to keep the cost minimal. As I mentioned no cable jack so I just need a screen and some way to get Netflix on the screen. Whatever you suggest is much appreciated. I really know nothing about this. |
| We have a smart TV in our basement. There are several apps that I don't use, like Hulu and some others. We use ours to access youtube and netflix mostly. Upstairs in the living room we have a roku. |
is $170 too much? https://www.amazon.com/TCL-32S305-32-Inch-Smart-Model/dp/B01MU1GBLL/ref=sr_1_1?s=tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1492187667&sr=1-1&keywords=smart+tv&refinements=p_n_size_browse-bin%3A1232879011 This is a 32" smart TV made by Roku. They've been getting great reviews. I wanted to get one myself, but the size I wanted was out of stock at the time. TCL 32S305 32-Inch 720p Roku Smart LED TV (2017 Model) by TCL Reasons why I'd suggest this one: -the price is great. Through best buy, most 32" smart TVs are $200ish -built in wifi. The only connection you'll need to plug in is power cable. -there are more apps aside from Netflix that are built in, so you have the option for more if you want them later on (Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Amazon video, ABC, CBS all access, PBS, Pandora, Spotify, etc) -HDMI ports so you can add in an apple TV if you choose to later on. It can also work as a regular cable TV if you'd like for it to later on. -Roku has an app on your phone you can use as a remote if you'd prefer it. |
Great suggestion and I am ok with the price! Thanks so much! |
| We have the 48" version in the living room and love it. |
We have a Samsung smart TV mounted in our bedroom and I love it. The only apps I really use are Netflix and Amazon, but it's SO convenient and easy. My mom doesn't have a smart TV, but we bought her a Roku and it's changed her life!

| Roku or firestick |
|
I would just buy a regular TV and an Amazon Firestick ($39). Firestick connects to Amazon instant video, Netflix, and Hulu and also supports Sling.
Firestick has built in Wifi and just plugs into the TV's HDMI port. Super easy! You can also upgrade to a voice activated remote if you'd like |
| Smart tvs have static app options and are buggy. Get the roku tv or a tv you like and the roku stick. The roku adds and updates apps and is better software overall than what you'll find in a tv. |

+1 for a regular TV with a “smart” add-on. I have a basic HDTV and added a fire stick with Alexa voice control - I love it!!! I subscribe to Hulu, Neifx, and Amazon Prime Video so I have all those apps and I also get HBO Go via my AT&T mobile plan so I added that app as well. Started watching Big Little Lies last night.
The Firestick interface is very easy to use and it’s truly a plug and play device. I would rather have a device (Firestick, Roku, Chromecast, Apple TV) to manage and that can easily be fixed or replaced than having it built into the TV. |
