Are a lot of families leaving? How many classes do you think there will be per grade? My kids are at one of these schools and we live near both. I'm hearing buzz from my kids about kids leaving for 4th to home school or go to St. Peters or doing shadow days at other privates, but I'm not sure how much it's just kids talking. Maybe families are looking casually now but will not leave next year. I'm curious. At the same time, I'm not hearing the stress from kids and parents about not getting into Latin and Basis for 5th next year.

This is where I wish there was more transparency so there could be facts instead of rumors.
Schools know how many kids applied in the lottery by grade so if you ask a school, they could tell you how many played the lottery which would give you an idea of how many kids are returning for the next grade - of course, you don't know of those who didn't play the lottery, if their plans involve homeschooling, moving or privates. However, it would be based on data as opposed to rumors or crowd-sourcing. This would help with 4th grade info. |
| I'd bet money that more than 30 currently enrolled 4th graders will show up at Brent for 5th in August. That number is in the cards. Hardly anybody got into Latin without an older sibling (rumor has it just 2 students), some families find themselves in the low 100s and 200s on the BASIS and Hobson waiting lists (not much hope), and some just want to come back. |
| no 4th graders would be applying to Stuart-Hobson. SH starts in 6th. |
That number for Latin isn't right. It's closer to 40. |
I think PP meant only 2 non sibs are going from Brent to Latin |
I think they were referring to kids from Brent without sibs getting into Latin. |
Ah, OK. That sounds right! |
PP meant applying to Watkins for 5th so automatic to SH? |
| Why would kids be "leaving for 4th to home school"? |
Yeah, that made me wonder too! If there are hordes of people quitting work on the Hill to homeschool their 5th graders, then I don't think it's really worth bothering worrying about because that's just so odd. |
OP asked about 4th and 5th grade. Likely refering to current 5th graders, some of whom probably also applied for Latin and Basis |
| I heard parents are going to start sending their kids to Jefferson middle school so I assume many will stay at Brent for 5th like PP stated. Not sure if it's accurate info. |
| I cannot believe that the current crop of Brent parents will send their kids to Jefferson, but I would love it if they did. |

News flash: Brent's getting a new principal in the fall (current principal resigning after six years on the job, not being fired). Announcement to parents made by email last night.
The new head will surely play a role in shaping the Brent-Jefferson relationship. |
