Infertility Support and Discussion
| i miscarried at 5 wks. disappointing, but not that far along. it has been 5 weeks and my cycle hasn't started yet. how long does it usually take for the body to recover and start a new cycle? my doctor's response "when your body is ready." was probably completely true, but not helpful. any thoughts or advice? thanks. |
| I am so sorry for your loss. I am going through a miscarriage right now as well. My doctor indicated it would take about 6 weeks. My cycles tend to be a bit longer than normal, so for me I know it will probably take a bit longer. I had one other miscarriage and think it took about 2 months for my cycle to start. |

I'm so sorry for you loss. I miscarried at 9 weeks and didn't get my period back for 7 weeks. I don't know if it makes a difference how far along you were or not - they were measuring my beta numbers and I did get my period back about a month after my beta hit zero.
Take good care of yourself. |

It is very hard to know when things will start up again.. I like certainty and was not happy with "when your body is ready answer". So I spent time on researching this. The most important piece of info. is when the hormone level goes back to zero... and then you count from there (don't count from date of Dx or when you had D&C or when you started bleeding). You need at least 3 weeks from when hormones hit zero, one week where body is getting ready to release and then releasing the egg and then the two weeks after that, so 3 weeks is the minimum... it cannot be any shorter than that.
Two extra things to take into consideration: 1) If you are tested and it is zero but you are still bleeding or spotting, you still need at least 3 weeks after the spotting ends. 2) If less than 3 weeks after you stop bleeding, you bleed or spot again, you need another 3 weeks after to stop again at a minimum before you can expect to see a period. So 3 weeks is the minimum but 4 to 6 is typical from when levels go to zero. And it will not be a 'typical' period - could be heavier, could be lighter, more cramping, less cramping, longer short more PMS less PMS.... it will be different. I am very sorry for your loss. |
