We will be in Iceland for 5 days. No kids. So far I have the Blue Lagoon and that is it.
Rent a car and drive the ring road. Jokulsarlon iceberg lagoon is awesome. Black sand beach and rock formations in Vik are also beautiful. Geo-thermally heated pools in every town - embrace the spa culture! So many things to see and do - you will love it!

I doubt you can do the whole ring road in 5 days. That usually is about a 10 day trip if you want to have time to stop and see things. I'd spend the time on the southern coast. Here is a fairly aggressive itinerary hitting many of the "must-see" locations: Rejkyavik (day 1); Golden Circle (day 2) (Thingveller, Geysir and Gullfoss waterfall); drive to Skatfell national park stopping in Vik on the way (day 3); hike glacier at Skatfell and see the Jokularlon lagoon (day 4); make your way back to the airport and go to Blue Lagoon (day 5). Or skip the Blue Lagoon (fairly touristy). For a true local experience, try to go to one of the modern public geothermic pools such as Laugardalslaug where locals go to soak.
Be sure to book your hotels early if you are going in the summer. Iceland is very popular these days and does not yet have sufficient hotel rooms to meet demand. |
We went inside a glacier, it was very cool. They have day tours from Reykjavik. Here is the website: https://intotheglacier.is/

We went many years ago and we did a horseback riding tour of a volcanic lava field.

I heard the ice is spectacular
Thingvellir National Park -- it's part of the Golden Circle and is definitely worth an unhurried visit. We did a bus day tour from Reykjavik, which stopped there for around an hour, which wasn't enough time. The scenery is stunning and it's the fault line where the North American and European tectonic plates meet, which is pretty cool. If you're into snorkeling, you can snorkel/swim between the plates. We didn't because we went in January, but I would love to go back and do it in the summer.
