First lady Melania Trump is visiting a Washington charter school with Queen Rania of Jordan and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.
The queen, who has become known for her education advocacy, is in Washington with her husband, King Abdullah II, who is meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House. Wednesday's visit to Excel Academy Public Charter School was meant to highlight the Trump administration's focus on school choice.... I'm no supporter of her husband, but I think any attention on DC kids from a sitting FLOTUS is a good thing. Maybe she could visit schools and nonprofits with good anti-bullying programs, like Michelle Obama (  ) highlighted fitness and gardens.
But DeVos (  ) needs to STAY AWAY from DC schools. We don't need her tone-deaf presence. The school choice movement is well-established here. Her presence is just a reminder of how she disrespected teachers at her first visit and how much opposition there was to her nomination. She is an insult to the education sector, especially special education and disabilities. She bought her job when there are plenty of folks from the right and left who would be more effective.
She should spend more time in places that don't have as much school choice. |
